How to Read This Page Like a Skeptic
It's tempting to treat the top of an antivirus rating table as an unquestionable answer, especially in a category this heavily marketed. We'd rather you understand exactly what's driving the order, because healthy skepticism toward any single ranking — including ours — leads to better decisions here.
What Actually Moves a Score
Protection alone accounts for half of every score, on purpose. A product can't out-price or out-perform its way to the top of this list without strong, independently verified detection results — those two other criteria only carry 30% and 20% respectively. If a fast, cheap product ranks lower than you expected, it's almost always because its lab results don't hold up to the same scrutiny as the products above it.
Cases Where Rank Order Can Mislead You
A product ranked lower overall can still be the single best option for a specific situation if it happens to excel exactly where you need it — say, unusually light performance impact on older hardware, or strong dedicated Mac or mobile protection. Understanding Score Bands
Don't read too much into the gap between adjacent ranks when scores are close — a 9.3 versus a 9.0 is real but narrow. The bands that matter more: anything above roughly 9 has consistently strong independent lab results and minimal measured performance impact, while anything below roughly 7 usually has a specific, named weakness in its full review — a spottier detection record, heavier system impact, or an unusually confusing interface.
Why a Product's Rank Can Shift Between Visits
We don't re-test on a fixed calendar — we re-test when something material changes, including promptly after a significant independent lab result shift. If a product's position moves between visits to this page, it reflects a real change on the vendor's end, not a cosmetic site update.
Using the Filters Instead of Scrolling Everything
The scenario and price filters exist because "best antivirus" genuinely depends on what you're protecting. Filter by use case first — home, business, Mac, Android, iPhone, lightweight — then by price if that's a hard constraint, then by free-plan availability if you want to try before paying.
